Leader2023

Tell us about your company and role.

I have a dual role at Vervaunt — partially focusing on the running of the business and day-to-day operations (Operations Director) and also still supporting / governing re-platforming projects for our clients, as part of our eCommerce consultancy team.

The key part of the first aspect is to ensure we improve how we’re operating (scale and efficiency), remain profitable, and build solid processes. The key part of the second aspect is to identify and mitigate risks, manage key stakeholders, and ensure things are documented effectively.

I think the dual focuses keep me challenged and most importantly, excited about my role and the team.

How would you describe yourself?

I would describe myself as an honest and thoughtful human being who is always looking to push / develop others and make things more efficient and effective. I’m super passionate about what I do for work and love having fun and being active outside of work!

I would say I’m very diligent and people often say my passion is my biggest strength. I am at my best (in the professional world) when tasks are being delivered on-time and on-budget and to-do lists are being ticked off.

What qualities do you think a good leader needs to have?

I think it’s super important for a leader to be approachable and empathic. A leader should always try to better the team; motivate, nurture, and train / develop them — they are the future after all!

A leader should always celebrate the wins, no matter how small. They should have perception and be fair; treat others how one would like to be treated, and then some!

Depending on the level — encourage strategic thinking — it’s important to have eyes on the prize (I have to repeat this to myself regularly). It’s also super important to continuously be open to review and adjust -— change is a good thing, sometimes.

What has been your biggest professional success so far?

THIS for sure!

I guess I have celebrated something each year — I feel like I have grown a lot in this opportunity. I have experienced being here as a team of 5 to 40, so you can imagine the wins along the way.

Last year was doing a panel for Vervaunt Pulse Summit — that was a personal push for me as I am not a natural person on stage so I was proud to push myself there. I’ve also delivered some really large, complex re-platforming projects ◊ including Self-Portrait, Toteme, Globe-Trotter, David Austin Roses, and various others.

I just have to add a caveat — I wouldn’t be here without the team — special shout out to them all.

What causes are you most passionate about?

Injustice in general.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing eCommerce brands?

I think it’s a combination of increased competition, reduced demand, increasing cost of acquiring new customers, increased costs and complexity around supply chain. I think then balancing increased trading and efforts to grow with standing out as a brand is the biggest one overall.

What's your favorite loyalty program or subscription offering from an eCommerce brand?

I don’t often tend to contribute to many loyalty programs but I am a sucker for SpaceNK — I like products and I like getting rewards — I am a simple girl and I don’t like jumping through hoops to get my prize.

What do you geek out over?

Process and organization.
